The name Chrysanthemum comes from two Greek words “Chrysos” meaning gold and “anthos” meaning flower.The genus Chrysanthemum is a large one,they vary greatly in form,size and colour.Chrysanthemums can be grown in many different climates.

Origin

The origin of the Chrysanthemum is Asiatic and the native habitat of the plants is Northern China,Mongolia,Korea and later Japan.

What to do

*Buy Chrysanthemums where at least half of the flowers are partially open, this is very important with Disbuds which only have one flower per stem.Half open disbuds will often not open, so choose those that are fully open

* Remove any foliage that will sit below the water line.

* Recut stems on a sharp angle and place in fresh water with flower food.

* Remove any yellowing leaves as they develop and recut stems regularly.

* Chrysanthemums are not ethylene sensitive, their most common problem is stem blockage.

* NEVER NEVER smash or split the stems of chrysanthemums or any other woody stemmed flower such as a Protea or a Rose. This damages the flower stem and hinders the water uptake, meaning flowers will wilt more quickly.

* Keep them out of sunlight and drafts

Anzac Day

Anzac Day 25th April is probably Australia’s most important national occasion. It marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australia and new Zealand forces during the First World War. ANZAC stands for Australian and new Zealand Army Corps.

What Does it Mean Today?

Australians recognise 25th April as an occasion of national commemoration. Commemorative services are held at dawn, the time of the original landing across the nation. Later in the day, ex-servicemen and women meet and join in marches through major cities and many smaller centres. Commemorative  ceremonies are held at war memorials around the country. Its a day when Australians reflect on many different meanings of war.

Laying Of Wreaths

Flowers have traditionally been laid on graves and memorials in memory of the dead. The Traditional Laurel Wreath is made using  Laurel leaves as the base, Laurel is a commemorative symbol that is used by the ancient Romans to crown victors and the brave as a mark of honor. The Spray created at the base of the Laurel Wreath traditionally consists of  Red Poppies as they have been widely accepted throughout the allied nations as the Flower of remembrance, during the First World War red poppies were seen to be among the first living plants that sprouted from the devastation of the battlefields of Northern France and Belgium.  Rosemary symbolising remembrance is placed to compliment the poppies. Rosemary is an ancient symbol of remembrance, since ancient times this aromatic herb has been believed to improve the memory. Sprigs of Rosemary are also worn on Anzac Day and is of particular significance for Australians, as it is found growing wild on the Gallipoli peninsular. With a Least We Forget Ribbon placed across the wreath  high on the left and low on the right symbolising the rising  and setting of the sun, east to west.

Donnica was a dual Australian Surf Life Saving Beach Sprint and Flags Champion who died in a tragic cliff fall at North Avoca Beach on April 10th 2007. The inaugural Sports Dinner to be held on Saturday April 12th at Mingara Recreation Club will be a major fund raiser.Special Guests include  Mariners John Hutchinson,  Netballer Alison Broadbent,  and  Manlys Matt Orford.

Celosia are very unusual flowers in shape and texture, they come in bright pinks,reds,white, purple,yellows and oranges. There are three varieties pyramidal-is which looks like prince of  Wales feathers,spicata very similar to heads of wheat and crista which can be likened to a piece of coral or a psychedelic brain.

Availability : All year round,mainly spring and summer.

Stem Length : 30 to 60 cm

When Buying Look For

* The flowers are fully developed and brightly coloured

* Buds do not open in the vase

* Avoid bunches with yellow leaves.

Flower Care

* Keep cool at all times

* Strip leaves from bottom half of each stem

* Re-cut at least 2cm off each stem and place in water.

* Leaves turn yellow and rot before flowers wilt, so strip as many leaves off as possible.

* Always use a preservative as this will keep  open flowers looking fresh.

Drying Tips

Cut the feathers and cockscombs when the blooms are fully developed. Tape the stems upside down to a coat-hanger and cover the blooms with a brown paper bag to obtain the richest colours. Hang in a dark draft free room for approximately three weeks until fully dried.
