Hello, Flower Doctor here, Why not use unprotected metal vases, and what else is toxic to flowers? Cut flower food creates an acid vase solution , pH 4-5. This results in an exchange of metal ions if containers of Zinc or any other non-protected metal are used. The concentration of these metal ions might become too high during vase life in the vase solution. Once these metal ions are absorbed in the water, they show to be phytotoxic, the result of which is dramatic leaf and petal burning and stem discolouration. If you want to still use zinc or metal buckets for their look the answer is simple. Use plastic bucket/vase inside the zinc bucket or other metal vases, thereby avoiding contact between the zinc or metal bucket and the cut flower solution.
