How to keep cut flowers for longer

Published: Friday 18 December 2015

Hello, Flower Doctor here! Did you know … keeping flowers in a vase near ripening fruit can accelerate the flowers aging? This is because ripening fruit produces ethylene gas, which has a very simple chemical structure and it promotes ripening of flowers, fruit and pot plants. Cut flowers are very sensitive to ethylene which is actually one of the major post-harvest problems for cut flowers. Placing the flowers next to ripening fruit surrounds the flowers with ethylene gas and the cut flowers absorbs the ethylene which accelerates the flowers aging. So, to give your cut flowers a longer life be sure to place them in a cool spot away from any ripening fruit.
